Sclerotherapy or injection treatment is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of your spider or varicose veins. A tiny needle is used to inject the veins with one of several different kind of solution called sclerosant (chemical irritant), that damages the interior lining of the target vein and causes blood clotting in the lumen of the vessel. In response, the vein collapse, seal shut and are reabsorbed by the body.
The number of sclerotherapy treatments needed varies, depending on the number, size and type of varicose veins being treated and you may need 2 or 3 sessions, and occasionally more than this. Typically patient will receive several injections per treatment session. The procedure is performed at doctor’s office and may not require local anesthesia. Generally normal activities can be resumed immediately after sclerotherapy and compression stockings need to be worn on leg for several days following the procedure.
